Uranium mining endangers river

February 12, 2010

(USA) League of Individuals for the Environment Feb. 5--Concerns over proposed uranium mining in Pittsylvania County led the Southern Environmental Law Center to include the Roanoke River basin in its 2010 list of top 10 endangered places in its coverage area.

This is the first year the environmental advocacy group included the Roanoke River on its list, said senior attorney Kay Slaughter. The river, she said, provides drinking water to millions in southern Virginia and parts of northern North Carolina, includ-ing Virginia Beach and Henderson, N.C.

“The reason for the whole basin is its potential endangerment, not just from uranium, but the other chemicals used in the mining and milling process,” Slaughter said. The list, released this week, also includes the Chesapeake Bay and the mountainous coal region of southwestern Vir-ginia. The Southern Environmental Law Center does work in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama.

France and South Korea join in uranium mining

February 12, 2010

KEPCO Partners with Areva in Uranium Mining The Chosun Ilbo (English Edition): Daily News from Korea 8 Feb 2010 KEPCO has joined hands with France’s Areva SA to develop uranium mines around the world. The Korean power monopoly said Sunday that it signed an agreement on Thursday with Areva for the joint development project.

Areva, the world’s fourth largest uranium producer and nuclear plant constructor, last year competed with KEPCO to win a nuclear power plant order from the UAE.

The new agreement allows KEPCO to participate in developing overseas uranium mines. Areva owns six uranium mines worldwide, which last year produced a combined 6,500 tons of the material used to fuel nuclear power plants.

POGO is Shocked by Wasteful Spending in DOE Budget

Project on Government Oversight, Ingrid Drake, 4 Feb 2010 In the midst of initiating a federal spending freeze, it is shocking that President Obama’s FY 2011 Budget Request released this week pours billions of dollars into two unnecessary nuclear weapons construction projects. There is no demonstrated requirement for either the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) at the Y-12 National Security Complex nor the Chemical and Metallurgical Research Replacement Nuclear Facility (CMRR-NF) at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Low price for uranium for the year ahead

February 12, 2010

An Un-Happy New Year For Uranium2/02/2010 Nine MSN By Andrew Nelson January was tough on uranium, with U3O8 prices dropping more than 5%, or US$2.25/lb to $42.25/lb from the prior month. The price is now at its lowest level since March 2009.The fairly steady decline that has been seen over the past few months is primarily the function of supply and demand fundamentals, with a high availability of stock not being helped by increasingly low-priced supply and light, mostly discretionary demand………….with demand remaining discretionary in nature, buyers are only really moving to lock in lower prices. Unfortunately, this demand is being met by an ever increasing willingness on the part of some sellers to lower prices further in order to close sales.

First Uranium warns finances may have been compromised

February 3, 2010

First Uranium warns finances may have been compromised Eric Lam, Financial Post  February 02, 2010 – “…….the unexpected loss of an environmental permit last month, while warning the delays have compromised the company’s finances.

The environmental authorization was for a new tailings storage facility, part of an existing tailings recovery project in the North West province of South Africa………….

Toronto-based First Uranium warned that construction delays as a result of this setback have “disrupted” financing opportunities which, if not obtained, would “severely compromise the company’s financial position.”………

First Uranium is also scaling back production from its tailings recovery project in March, to maximize its tailings capacity. The move will result in lower revenues and increase financing needs, the company warned.

The Department of Agriculture, Conservation, Environment and Rural Development, a provincial ministry, withdrew First Uranium’s environmental authorization to build a tailings storage facility in late January. The facility is supposed to be part of a larger tailings recovery project.

Tailings are waste by-products produced while refining ore. As the process produces a slurry of fine mineral particles suspended in water, tailings present a serious environmental issue for many mining operations.
