a threat of contaminated water leaking from Ranger into nearby waterways could keep the mine closed for the rest of this year….there’s no way the company will be able to safely treat the contaminated water stored at Ranger by the time the mining lease expires in 10 years….

Big drop in Ranger uranium mine’s output

Energy Resources Australia uranium output down 28% – MarketWatch, By David Fickling, SYDNEY  13 jan 2011, – Uranium oxide produced from Energy Resources of Australia Ltd.’s (ERA.AU) Ranger mine fell 28% on the year in 2010, dropping from 5,250 metric tons in 2009 to 3,793 tons, the company said Thursday.

Uranium miner’s profits down 82%

ERA in July reported an 82% plunge in first-half net profit to 22.7 million Australian dollars (about US$22.4 million), largely thanks to the lower ore grades.

How to get your uranium mine approved – stack the panel!

We still do not know whether or how key issues – such as workers’ health and safety, tailings rehabilitation, transport and groundwater impacts – will be addressed by the panel. We fear that crucial issues, such as impacts on workers’ health and communities and nuclear weapons proliferation, will not be addressed at all.

The panel excludes experts in relevant areas such as occupational health and safety, transport, Aboriginal heritage and native title, non-proliferation and safeguards.

Deplorable history of Australia’s uranium mining – impact on Aboriginals

The1997 Australian parliament report observes: ‘(The) history of uranium mining in Australia and its impact on Aboriginal people is deplorable. Past mining in places like Rum Jungle have left areas so degraded that traditional owners are unable to use them, while mines such as Ranger (also in the Northern Territory) have been forced on traditional owners against their will.” “Even at mines such as Olympic Dam,” it adds, “…there was deep concern at the reckless degradation of sacred sites and insensitivity to their culture.”

Resource Centre for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, August 2010, “……..For decades, uranium mining has been a touchy subject for Aboriginal people. Hundreds of Aboriginal communities were cleared out into cattle stations, towns and cities in the fifties and sixties, when Australian and British governments tested atomic weapons in the South Australian desert and off the coast of Western Australia.
That left many Aboriginal people with serious health problems such as cancer and unexplainable illnesses. (more…)

Uranium miner Energy Resources of Australia refused to discuss the two accidents with the NT News.

Miners fear life after chemical leak,  Northern Territory News, NIGEL ADLAM, August 13th, 2010 TWO uranium miners thought they were going to die after fleeing to a “safe room” to escape a chemical leak.They almost lapsed into unconsciousness as ammoniaseeped into the room through the door.
