State regulators asserted that people at fences around Energy Fuels’ 880-acre site could be exposed to radiation approaching a 25-millirem limit. “A projected dose that approaches a regulatory limit cannot be considered trivial,” a CDPHE document said.

not coming on – Colorado uranium mill stalled

Uranium pullback, High Country News, Jodi Peterson | Aug 18, 2010 It looks like Colorado won’t have a functioning uranium mill anytime soon – to the relief of anti-nuclear advocates.We reported in July that Cotter Corp. was planning to reopen its Canon City site by 2014. Legislation passed this spring means that Cotter would have to clean up prior contamination before starting to process uranium ore again. Now the company plans to stop the monitoring it was doing for toxic emissions at the site — a signal that it won’t continue trying to reopen the mill…….

The cancer inheritance from uranium milling

One family who left the area knows well the paradox uranium has brought to the region. They lived in Uravan in the 1960s and paid a tragic price for living in the old mill town. Three daughters died of cancer. The parents each have lost cancer-ridden body organs. They still have ties to the area and requested anonymity given the contentious nature of the uranium debate in the valley.

Uranium mining hampered by lack of milling facilities

Proposed Mt. Taylor uranium mine faces new obstacle « New Mexico Independent, By Marjorie Childress 10 May 2010,”…….There is only one mill in the United States that is currently operating–the White Mesa Mill in Utah, which has its own environmental problems.The lack of milling facilities makes the resumption of widespread conventional mining problematic. General Atomics’ history of violating environmental laws

Colorado law to make uranium mines and mills clean up radioactive wastes

Legislature passes uranium cleanup bill, Google hosted news, By COLLEEN SLEVIN (AP) – 29 April DENVER — Colorado lawmakers have passed a bill that requires uranium mills to clean up radioactive waste before accepting more radioactive material.The Senate voted 24-9 in favor of the bill Wednesday. Later the House agreed with changes made in the Senate and readopted the bill by a vote of 60-3. It now goes to Gov. Bill Ritter. (more…)
