US President Joe Biden will use the Defense Production Act, which gives the drug manufacturing company Merck & Co the right to direct the production of the private sector to produce Johnson & Johnson’s new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccine, which has received emergency use approval at the weekend.
White House Spokesperson Jen Psaki made statements at a press conference at the White House on combating the Covid-19 outbreak and vaccination.
Pointing out that there are problems in the production of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine, Psaki stated that Merck & Co, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturing companies, will activate the Defense Production Act of Biden to produce the vaccine.
When asked whether Biden made any promises to provide vaccines to this country during his meeting with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador yesterday, Psaki said that their priority is the vaccination of the American people.
Stating that they will always support international efforts for vaccines against Covid-19, Psaki expressed concern that the Russian and Chinese vaccines “do not have the same standards as the USA”.
WHAT IS THE DEFENSE PRODUCTION LAW?
The Defense Production Act was passed just before the Korean War.
The law empowers the US president to enable the private sector to produce products that the country urgently needs.
The president can use his authority under this law to have companies produce certain materials for the emergency confronting the country, if he deems necessary.
