WHO said that the B.1.617 variant, first found in India, was detected in more than 1,200 genetic sequences loaded into the GISAID open access database “from at least 17 countries”. The organization said in its weekly epidemiological update on the pandemic, “Most sequences have been uploaded from India, UK, USA and Singapore.” Other countries where the variant is known to be detected are as follows; Turkey, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Japan, Guadeloupe, South Korea, Fiji, Sri Lanka and Nepal.
